Hilltoppers win two, advance to Regional Championship Game
Senior Mandy Phillips led St. Edward's to a win over Southeastern Oklahoma, 1-0, and freshman Courtney Lavender hit her 18th double this season in the Hilltoppers win against Angelo State, 3-2, to tally a new school record Saturday in the South Central Regional Tournament at ASU Softball Complex.
Angelo State (48-12) scored first in fourth inning of the Regional Tournament semi-final game. Back-to-back singles and an error put runners on second and third for the Rambelles. Another single from Laura Lopez scored both runs to give Angelo State the lead, 2-0.
Philips singled in the bottom of the fifth and rounded to third on a single from sophomore Lisa Paul. She scored on a throwing error and Paul advanced to second. Senior Kristen Lozano hit another single to score Paul before the end of the inning and tie the game, 2-2.
With one out in the Hilltoppers final at bat, freshman Lexi Stephens tripled to right center. Angelo State then intentionally walked Phillips and Paul to load the bases. Lozano stepped to the plate and sent a high ball to right field. The defense dropped the catch and Stephens sprinted across the plate to give St. Edward's the win.
Senior Robin Becker (27-7) pitched the first three innings of the game. She allowed just four hits and one earned run. Freshman Diana Cezeaux (23-8) entered the game in the fourth inning to earn the win. She allowed only four hits and struckout four batters.
With the win over the Rambelles, 3-2, the Hilltoppers advanced to the Championship game against Southeastern Oklahoma (53-11). The Savage Storm were 3-0 in the Regional Tournament while St. Edwards' was 4-1.
The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning. Freshman Stacy Giles walked and then senior Melissa McSheffery laid down a sacrifice bunt to move sophomore pinch runner Kaleigh Courville to second. Courville then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Phillips hit a hard single up the middle to score Courville and give the edge to the Hilltoppers.
Southeastern Oklahoma was unable to answer in the top of the seventh and dropped game one of the Championship series to St. Edward's, 1-0.
Becker tossed six innings with four hits and two strikeouts to earn the win. Cezeaux shutdown the last three batters to closeout the game.
