Newman Wins Big, 106-75
The Newman men’s basketball team (1-1) opened the home portion of their 2008-09 schedule with a hefty win, defeating the Bethel Threshers (1-4), 106-75.
Newman had seven players in double figures with junior Tayler Alvey leading the way with 15 points, five assists and four steals, followed by senior Ryan Bradley with 14 points and six rebounds. Senior Stephen Williams snagged a team-high seven rebounds while also contributing 11 points.
The Threshers’ Todd Rambo led all scorers with 19 points with Thomas Buckner adding 12.
Newman held Bethel to 25-of-64 shooting from field-goal range, while the Jets shot 58.5 percent from inside the arc. NU scored 20 points off of Bethel turnovers, while the Threshers scored zero.
The Jets jumped out to a quick 12-2 lead in the first four minutes with eight of those points coming from Tayler Alvey. Newman outscored Bethel 43-23 in the next 16 minutes to take the 55-23 halftime lead.
The Threshers would come out and find momentum in the second half, getting as close as 79-53, but that would be as tight as the game would get. Newman hit the 100-point mark with a free-throw by freshman Caleb Sheve with 4:19 left in the game and would roll to a 106-75 win.
The Jets return to the hardwood at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 22 against in-state foe Emporia State.
