Hilltoppers Down Jets, 8-1

The St. Edward’s men’s tennis team rolled past Newman, 8-1 Saturday afternoon at the Emmett Strohmeyer Varsity Courts. The win gives the Hilltoppers their second-straight conference win.

St. Edward’s (5-4, 2-0 HC) got a quick start in doubles as sophomore Ned Boone and senior Brett Powers paired up in the No. 3 position to take down Nathan Peters and Daniel Dromirov, 8-0. Sophomore Ryan Wiggins and senior Justin Raiti followed with a victory in the No. 2 match against Juraj Surovy and Kevin Klein, 8-6. Senior Boris Barrios and junior Mick Walter gained the final doubles point for the Hilltoppers against Victor Bello and Chris King, 8-5.

Senior Bernie Lancaster took the first singles point against Mark Reidl in the No. 6 match, 6-1, 6-0. In the No. 5 match, Wiggins swept Peters, 6-0, 6-0. Walter took down Klein in the No. 4 match, 6-0, 6-4. In the No. 3 match, King was able to edge Raiti to gain a point for the Jets, 7-6, 6-3. Powers took the point in the No. 2 match against Surovy. Powers dropped the first set, 3-6. Powers battled back to take the following two sets, 6-4, 6-3. Boone took the final point of the day in his No. 1 match against Dunseith. Boone dropped the first set, 3-6. After regaining his momentum, the Hilltopper was able to take the second set, 6-3 and force a third set. In the third set, Boone pulled away, 6-1.

The Hilltoppers will be back in action, Monday as they travel to Las Vegas to take on Armstrong Atlantic State. First-serve is set for 1 p.m.
