Hilltoppers Pick Up Victory Over Jets, 8-1

The St. Edward’s women’s tennis team downed the Newman Lady Jets 8-1, Saturday afternoon. The win gives the Hilltoppers their second-straight conference win.

St. Edward’s (6-5, 2-0 HC) was able to take all three doubles points beginning with the Hilltopper duo of freshman Paige Rachel and Audrey Tompkins over Laryssa Ferreira and Emily Gerber, 8-4 in the No. 1 match. Sophomore Mary Bain and senior Eliabeth Jacobi too the No. 2 match over Christa Lawlor and Ashley Dunham, 8-1. In the No. 3 match, sophomore Heather Brien and senior Caryn McGraw downed Gabriela Balarin and Megan Lowe, 8-1.

In singles action, Rachel was defeated by Laryssa Ferreira, 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 1 match. Tompkins was able to take the No. 2 point against Balarin in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. In the No. 3 match, Bain was able to defeat Jones, 6-1, 6-0. Jacobi followed by defeating Emily Gerber in the No. 4 match, 6-0, 6-1. Brien was able to sweep Lowe in the No. 5 match, 6-0, 6-0. McGraw finished the day’s competition by defeating Allison Gerber in the No. 6 match, 6-0, 6-0.

The Hilltoppers will be back in action, Monday as they travel to Las Vegas to take on Armstrong Atlantic State. First-serve is set for 1 p.m.
