The Newman women's golf team dropped three spots, but still posted a top-five finish at the Lion Invitational, which concluded Tuesday in Pottsboro , Texas . Alyssa Balding's back-to-back rounds of 79 (+7) led her to a sixth-place finish.
Balding's 36-hole score of 158 (+14) was the low score for Newman. Megan Birdsey was 10 strokes behind Balding after carding back-to-back rounds of 84 (+12) to finish with a tourney score of 168 (+24). Linzi Allan and Andrea Martires each finished the tournament in 171 strokes. Allan followed a first round of 82 (+10) with an 89 (+17) in the final round, while Martires carded rounds of 85 (+13) and 86 (+14), respectively. Rachel Stanley rounded out the Newman scorecard with a two-round score of 191 (+53).
As a team, Newman tallied a 668 and finished fifth in the 16-team event. The Jets finished seven strokes behind Lone Star foe Cameron, but topped Heartland Conference rival St. Mary's by seven strokes.
Angelo State won the event with a 36-hole score of 631.
The Jets are back in action Mar. 28 when they travel to Wichita Falls , Texas for the Midwestern State Invitational.
