Cardinals Take Second at Lion Invite

Good things happen for the Incarnate Word women’s golf team whenever they head to east Texas for a tournament hosted by Texas A&M University – Commerce.

Earlier this week, the Cardinals finished 2nd in a 16-team field at the Lion Invitational, led by freshman Joanna De Sa Pereira, who took first overall as an individual.

De Sa Pereira shot an opening-round 77 and then followed it up with a 73 (par on the course is 72) to shoot a 150 in the event and take the first-place individual award.

Thus far in the spring, De Sa Pereira has been the top golfer, or tied for the top, for Incarnate Word in every event UIW has attended.

As a team, the Cardinals combined for a 648 (330-318) for second place behind team-winner Angelo State University (317-314—631). Midwestern State took third with a 653.

Jessica Cornish finished tied for 11th with a 162 (81-81) and Sasha Kiger shot a 167 (90-77) to tie at 17th. Audrey Sitterly tied for 47th with a 174 and Emily Carruba tied for 49th at 175.

De Sa Pereira’s top finish is just the second time in UIW women’s golf history that the Cardinals had a player win an event. The last (and first) time that happened was in 2001 when Monica Guzman won a playoff and took the title with a 159 at a tournament hosted by none other than Texas A&M-Commerce.
