Three Heartland Conference softball players have been named to the 2010 All-South Central Region Team. The team was released on Wednesday, May 15. The Heartland Conference had two women on the first team, both St Edward's players and one women from Incarnate Word on the second team. The St. Mary's University softball team will head to its ninth NCAA Division II South Central Region Tournament this week. The eighth seeded Rattlers (34-19 overall) will face top seeded Midwestern State in the first round of the tournament on Friday at noon. St. Mary's enters the tournament on a roll, having won its last six games, including an 8-7 decision over St. Edward's University in the Heartland Conference Tournament Championship game. Midwestern State University was the Lone Star Conference regular season champion. Alex Garcia's bases-loaded walk with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning scored the winning run and lifted St. Mary's University to a 7-6 victory over St. Edward's University in the 2010 Heartland Conference Softball Tournament, played Saturday afternoon at Diane Daniels Field. The Rattlers led 6-2 after the fourth inning, but the Hilltoppers rallied for four runs over the next two innings, tying the game at 6-6, entering the seventh inning. Kelly Baker (Jr., Arlington, Texas) led off the inning by walking and Christina Rodriguez (Fr., San Antonio) followed with a walk of her own. The runners moved to second and third on a sacrifice bunt. SEU pitcher Paige Sandahl then walked Chelsea Wenske (Jr., Shiner) to load the bases. After Sarah Perez (Fr., San Marcos, Texas) struck out, Garcia (Fr., San Antonio) stepped up to the plate. Arlynda Flores and Chelsea Wenske smacked homeruns, and St. Mary's University held off a late rally by St. Edward's University for an 8-6 victory in the Heartland Conference Tournament semifinals, held Friday morning at Diane Daniels Field. With the victory, the Rattlers advance to the Heartland Conference Tournament Championship game on Saturday at noon at Diane Daniels Field. The Rattlers wasted no time in jumping on the Hilltoppers and starting pitcher Paige Sandahl. Katie Nichols (Fr., San Marcos, Texas) walked to lead off and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Arlynda Flores (Sr., Uvalde, Texas) picked up the second walk of the inning, and Kelly Baker (Jr., Arlington, Texas) brought both runners home with a double to right, giving St. Mary's a 2-0 lead. Christine Rodriguez (Fr., San Antonio) kept the rally going with an RBI single to make the score 3-0. That chased Sandahl from the game and brought in Diana Cezeaux on the mound. Taryn Munoz tossed her third straight shutout, while Alyssa Alfaro hit the game-winning two-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning, lifting St. Mary's University to a 2-0 win over the University of the Incarnate Word in the opening round of the Heartland Conference Softball Tournament, Thursday afternoon at Diane Daniels Field. Munoz (Sr., Bulverde, Texas) had only one 1-2-3 inning in the game, working her way into and out of trouble all day, but extended her scoreless innings streak to 19.2 innings with the complete game shutout. Munoz four hits and walked two, while striking out four. Sophomore Paige Sandahl struck out 11 batters on her way to a three-hit shutout to lead St. Edward’s to a 1-0 victory over Incarnate Word Saturday afternoon at Cardinal Field. The victory clinched the regular season conference championship, for St. Edward’s for the second-consecutive season. Incarnate Word (26-22, 14-6 HC) started the game with two-straight singles. The UTPB Lady Falcons softball team (18-27, 9-12) routed Lincoln University 11-1 on Sunday afternoon to advance to the Heartland Conference softball tournament. The victory gives allows the Lady Falcons to compete in the conference tournament for the second consecutive season while Lincoln’s season comes to a close at 8-30. After two scoreless innings, the Lady Falcons got a three-run homerun by Angel Castro in the top of the third inning to take a 3-0 lead.
