Newman Takes Heartland GPA Award for Fifth Straight Year

With a combined overall grade point average of 3.33, Newman University of Wichita, Kan. has been recognized for achieving the highest GPA among the athletic programs in the Heartland Conference for the 2014-2015 academic year.  Newman has held the honor for five consecutive years, 

The Newman men's and women's teams each compiled a 3.33 GPA overall. 

Lubbock Christian ranked second overall behind Newman by posting a 3.31 GPA for its athletic programs and St. Mary's was a close third, with a 3.27 GPA.

"Overall, the Heartland Conference continues to have a very solid GPA for our student-athletes," said Tony Stigliano, Heartland Conference commissioner.  "The academic success of our student-athletes, with the ultimate goal of graduation, is the highest priority for our members and while we always to work to improve our overall academic performance, we are very pleased with the combined GPA of our student-athletes and member institutions."

The conference as a whole saw a percentage increase overall in their GPA for the second consecutive year.  The conference promotes academic success through NCAA enhancement funds, promoting a successful balance between athletics and academics, adjusting regular season and championship schedules to minimize missed class time, and the recognition of academic success.
 
"Our presidents, athletic directors, faculty athletic representatives, senior women administrators and compliance officers are all focused on academic success, and their efforts are clearly making a difference," said Stigliano.

Academic All-Conference Team

ver 1000 student-athletes from 11 Heartland Conference member institutions have been recognized by the league on its 2014-15 Academic All-Conference honor roll. The teams include student-athletes from all sports sponsored by the Heartland Conference.

To be eligible for Heartland All-Academic honors, student-athletes must have lettered during the 2014-15 academic year, be in at least the second academic year at their institution and carry a cumulative grade-point average (GPA)of 3.0 or better for the Commissioner's Honor Roll or 3.5 or better for the Presidents' Honor Roll.  Click on the link below to view the complete Honor Roll.
