The Newman men's cross country team earned a third place finish at the Friends University Cross Country Invitational Thursday evening at Lake Afton. The Jets' women's squad placed sixth in the 11-team event.
In the men's race, Austin Hunt posted a 10th place finish with a time of 26:59. Nick Abbott was right behind him, finishing 11th with a 27:10 time. Four of the six Jets that participated in the event finished in the race's top 40. As a team, Newman finished third, 59 points behind second-placed Fort Hays State. NAIA power Southwestern won the event, edging Ft. Hays by three points.
Melissa Ortiz and Katie Hamlin had little trouble with the Lake Afton course. Ortiz was the top finisher for NU in the women's race, posting a 19:14 time that was good enough for a fourth-placed finish. Hamlin's time of 19:56 placed her 12th. In all, three Jets finished in the top 40. Tatum Walden's 21:29 time put her in 40th. As a team, the Jets finished sixth in the 11-team event. They finished 27 points behind Central Oklahoma.
Newman is back in action next Friday when they travel to South Bend, Ind., for the National Catholic Championships, hosted by Notre Dame.
