LAREDO, Texas –
For 11 years leading up to the 2018 Heartland Women’s Cross Country Championship no team has been able to wrestle the title away from Dallas Baptist University. That trend continued in 2018 as the Lady Patriots took four of the top five spots to win the title. Lubbock Christian senior Amira McKee claimed the individual championship in the 6,000-meter race with a time of 21:46.1.
 
The Lady Patriots posted a score of 26 running away with their 12th-straight title besting Lubbock Christian who finished in second with a score of 70. DBU took four of the top five places led by junior Micaela Lamb who finished just two seconds off McKee in 21:48.1. Juniors Danielle Rimann (21:55.4), Leah Lewis (21:56.1) and 2017 Individual Champion Hannah Moore (22:07.3) finished in 3rd, 4th and 5th. DBU freshman Analynne Klotz rounded out the scoring for the Lady Patriots finishing in 12th. All five DBU scorers earned All-Heartland First Team honors.
 
Lubbock Christian finished its record-breaking meet in second place, the highest team finish for the Lady Chaps since joining the Heartland Conference in 2013. The Lady Chaps were led by individual champion Amira McKee who captured her first individual win in the Heartland championship. Sophomore Poro Gahekave finished in seventh place in 22:23.3 earning her first All-Heartland honors. Andrea Sanchez (23:04.1) finished in 17th followed by Marissa Perez (20th, 23:21.1) and Jorie Fleischmen (28th, 23:35.7) who rounded out the scoring for LCU.
 
Texas A&M International finished in third place with a score of 89. The Dustdevils used home course advantage and moved up one spot from last year’s fourth-place finish. TAMIU was led by senior Renee Contreras who finished in sixth place with a time of 22:21.4. Sophomores Karla Resendez (9th, 22:34.7) and Abril Escamilla (10th, 22:34.7) both placed inside the top 10 for TAMIU and joined Contreras on the All-Heartland Team.
 
Newman finished the race in fourth place (100 pts.) followed by St. Edward’s in fifth (128 pts.), Oklahoma Christian in sixth (144 pts.), Rogers State in seventh (164 pts.) and UAFS in eighth (216 pts.).
 
Rogers State freshman Katelyn Alexander took home Freshman of the Year honors and was named to the All-Heartland First Team after finishing her first championship race in 11 th with a time of 22:40.4. DBU's Jacob Phillips was named the 2018 Heartland Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year. 
 
DBU earned eight All-Heartland honors including five First Team selections to lead all Heartland teams. Texas A&M International had three All-Heartland selections all on the first team. Lubbock Christian and Newman earned two selections, and Rogers State and Oklahoma Christian both had one runner named to an All-Heartland team.
 
Next up is the NCAA Division II South Central Regional Meet on Saturday, November 17 in Denver.
