SEU, StMU wins set up Battle of the Saints championship match

ARLINGTON, Texas – St. Edward’s and St. Mary’s both rolled into the 2019 Heartland Conference Women’s Tennis Championship Match with 4-0 victories in the semifinals on Friday at the Arlington Tennis Center in Arlington, Texas.
 
No. 1 St. Edward’s def. No. 4 Newman 4-0 – Box Score
 
St. Edward’s rolled to a 4-0 win over Newman picking up the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. The Hilltoppers got a win at line three from Elisa Guillen and Lauar Galvan 6-3, and a 6-4 win at No. 1 doubles from Beth Hayward and Valentina Martinez.
 
In singles, Valentina Martinez grabbed the first point with a 6-1, 6-3 over Isabela Bifano. Guillen put the Hilltoppers within one match of clinching scoring a 6-3, 6-4 win over Mierlla Cavalcanti at No. 6 singles. St. Edward’s freshman Kate Malazonia cruised to a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Liza Gerasimova to seal the match for the Hilltoppers.
 
The win sets up a fifth-straight championship matchup between rivals St. Edward’s and St. Mary’s. The Rattlers are 4-0 in the previous four meetings.

St. Mary’s advanced to the championship match for the seventh-straight season with a 4-0 win over DBU in the No. 2/3 semifinal.
 
StMU picked up wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles with identical 6-2 wins from Ally Maciel and Isabelle Bergman at line one, and Ranni Goodland and Ashley Penshorn at line three.
 
In singles, the Rattlers jumped out to a quick lead taking the first set from all but one of the singles matches. Maciel was dominant in a 6-1, 6-1 straight-set victory at No. 1 singles to give the Rattlers a 2-0 lead while Goodland’s 6-3, 6-0 win at line three put the Rattlers just one point away from victory.
 
Penshorn at No. 6 singles clinched the match with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Devon Austin-Canning sending StMU to the championship match.
