WACO, Texas - St. Mary’s Emilio Gonzalez and Rogers State’s Jess Whitting have been named the Heartland Men’s and Women’s Golfers of the Week for tournaments played from Feb. 14 - Feb. 20.
Men’s Golfer of the Week
Emilio Gonzalez, St. Mary’s
Sophomore, San Miguel Mexico
The sophomore had an impressive showing at the Rattler Invitational earlier this week. Despite difficult course conditions that saw gusting winds and occasional rainfall, Gonzalez posted a 7-under 137 for the tournament to claim the individual title. In the final round, he fired a 6-under par 66 to help lead the Rattlers to a second place team finish. This is Gonzalez’s second weekly honor this season.
Women’s Golfer of the Week
Jess Whitting, Rogers State
Freshman, Perth, Australia
Jess Whitting fired a school record final round to win the St. Edward's Invitational by three shots. Whitting posted a final round score of 3-under-par 67, the best round of the two-day tournament by four shots, to go from two shots back up a three-shot win. Whitting shot a score of 5-over-par 75 in round one for a total score of 2-over-par 142 to win in the field of 90 golfers at Onion Creek CC in Austin, Texas. This is Whitting’s second golfer of the week honor this season.
